Robin's Olde Timey Cure

This is a recipe that has been in use to cure cold and flu symptoms since at least the 1980's. The original recipe did not include Guajillo chile but the subtle warm flavor of this pepper really rounds out the wonderfully soothing properties of this home remedy.

2 Tablespoons ginger root, freshly grated only (Peeling is unnecessary but if you don't, give it a good scrub.)
1/4 Marx Foods Guajillo Chili, including seeds and membrane, optional
16 ounces boiling water
2 Tablespoons lemon juice, freshly squeezed only
Tablespoons honey
a pinch of Cayenne pepper

Steep the ginger and chili in the boiling water for five to ten minutes, covered. Toss in the ginger and Guajillo chili into the French press and steeps for ten minutes.

Strain and pour into a mug, add the lemon juice, honey, and a pinch of cayenne pepper.
Drink. Feel better.

I learned about this when I was working as an extra on The Three Stooges movie. I had to be on the set at 6 a.m. and I awoke with the worst sore throat and congestion! I drank it all the way in to Atlanta and by the time I got there I felt amazing! The Cure lasted for 16 hours that day and I drank it daily for three days! I've never forgotten it.

  2. This reminds me of what my mom made us kids while we lived it India. If we started feeling run down, she'd make a batch. Kept us strong & healthy for all 5 years!
