Orange Julius

When I was little, shopping at the local mall was fine, but going downtown was really special. It usually meant having lunch and, on many occasions, it also meant having an Orange Julius. Back in those days, you could get a raw egg added to your drink if you wanted it. We never did because my sister and I thought it was disgusting. We didn't realize we ate raw egg in mayonnaise all the time! And we had no clue about protein and how good it was for you. We just liked the taste of the Orange Julius and we also liked the specialness of our downtown adventures.

You can make this drink without the raw egg and it will taste just fine! But you should know that the Davidson’s Safest Choice Eggs we used are pasteurized, which eliminates the risk of salmonella. So raw eggs are awesome! Add two if you like!

Orange Julius

1 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
½ cup simple syrup (½ cup of water, ½ cup of sugar)
1 teaspoon powdered milk
½ teaspoon vanilla
1 raw Davidson's Safest Choice Egg white
Ice, enough to come to the top of the liquid added in the blender

First, make the simple syrup (ahead of time if you can). Heat ½ cup water and ½ cup sugar over low heat and stir until sugar is completely dissolved. Cool. Set aside until ready to make your Orange Julius.

Add all ingredients to the blender. Blend until combined and frothy.

Note: If you want to make a great smoothie out of this concoction, omit the ice and add one frozen banana to the mix. Blend.

Our cook Amy really wanted to make this recipe for the Davidson's Challenge. Read about Amy's story here. Although she didn't get the chance to develop the recipe, she would love the taste of this one. And, knowing her, I think she would get a kick out of the "glass" it was served in!
